What is First Night Alexandria?

What is First Night Alexandria (FNA) and how does it benefit our community?

First Night Alexandria, Inc. is dedicated to broadening and deepening the community’s appreciation of the performing and visual arts. We provide an alternative to traditional New Year’s Eve celebrations that enables the public to enjoy an evening of curated entertainment.  A portion of proceeds supports young musicians studying choral, band and orchestra in Alexandria city middle and high schools. Over the past 10 years FNA has donated over $35K. These funds help fill the gap in purchasing sheet music, uniforms, instruments, traveling to competitions and so much more. Now in our 27th year, this experience is always alcohol-free, affordable and family friendly.

Who will be featured at FNA this year?

Are FNA shows good for kids?

FNA 2021 is family-friendly and suitable for an intergenerational fun time together. Check out our Kids Celebrate activities during the daytime!

I’d rather not be out after dark – are there any activities for me?

We invite our more experienced party animals to enjoy a daytime variety showcase featuring PT Bratton of Clean Comedy Connection, a dance performance by Local Motion Youth Collectives, and powerful R&B, Southern Soul, Motown and Oldies music with Lady Mary. Tickets are $20. More Info

Pandemic Protocols & Emergency Preparedness

How is FNA keeping guests, volunteers, and performers safe and healthy during the event?

In order to protect our community during the ongoing pandemic, the following health precautions are in place for all First Night Alexandria activities:

If you do not feel well, stay at home.  Tickets are fully transferable.

For all indoor shows:  Guests are strongly encouraged to be vaccinated or to get a negative covid test within 72 hours of attending First Night Alexandria.

By purchasing a ticket to a show, you agree to comply with the mask wearing requirement. Refunds will NOT be issued to ticket holders who refuse to comply with the policy.

For outdoor experiences: First Night Alexandria strongly encourages attendees to spread out, practice social distancing, and wear masks when maintaining a safe social distance is not possible.

Is medical support available if I have an emergency during the event?

Yes, medical support will be available via 911. If you need assistance, please let one of our FNA volunteers know and they will be happy to help.

Ticket Information

How can I buy tickets?

All tickets will be sold online only on Eventbrite. *Prices subject to change.

How are this year’s tickets different from the All-Access Pass available in the past?

Our commitment to the health and safety of our guests, performers, and volunteers, has guided us to an individually-ticketed show format, rather than the all-access pass of years 2019 and prior. Essentially, you can access three shows this year for the same price as an all-access pass from years prior. We are also providing some free community events, such as the Kickoff and Welcome in Market Square, as well as our Countdown to 2022 Street Party, which is free and open to the public, in addition to the fireworks finale.

Where can I find showtimes?

Check out our Performances Schedule

Is each showtime at a venue the same performance?

Yes, each showtime will feature the same performance from our artists.

Will tickets be sold in-person/at the door?

We encourage you to purchase your tickets ahead of time, for the best price and for contactless entry.

What if I lose/forget my ticket or delete my confirmation email?

You should receive a confirmation email with your ticket information from Eventbrite upon checkout, to either print tickets or show on your mobile device. If you forget your ticket/code, we can look up your order at the venue.

Are there any free options to celebrate with FNA in Old Town on 12/31?

We are providing some free community events, such as the Kickoff and Welcome in Market Square, as well as our Countdown to 2022 Street Party, which is free and open to the public, in addition to the fireworks finale. More Info

Event Information

What age range is the Kids Celebrate portion of the day geared toward?

Generally, children ages 4-10 are the target age range. However, our Grammy Nominated Children’s Performers will bring the party for all ages!

Are there changes to the usual parking/transportation options in Old Town?

Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits Thursday, December 23 through Saturday, December 25; and Saturday, January 1. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no-parking zones, loading zones or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be posted and enforced on the holidays.

Transit: On Friday, December 24 and Friday, December 31, the fare-free DASH bus will observe the Christmas holiday and operate on a Sunday service schedule. On Saturday, December 25, and Saturday, January 1, DASH will operate on a regular Saturday service. The free King Street Trolley will operate from King Street Metro to Alexandria City Hall every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Visit for more information.

Where is the best parking in Old Town Alexandria?

Use the handy map provided by the City of Alexandria to find the best parking for your show’s venue! FNA’s venues are listed in red.

Will there be transportation between venues? If so, what is the cost and how often does it run?

Yes, there will be free buses and trolleys circulating in Old Town on New Year’s Eve.  We will supplement the existing service with a couple of additional buses that will make stops at the GW Masonic Temple and the Durant Center.  The other venues are all within 5 blocks of one another. These additional buses will begin at 6:30PM from 100 N. Pitt St and run until the last show ends at 11pm.
We encourage you to park with the end of your night in mind in the event that the buses fill up and you need to walk.  As a point of reference, it is one mile from Metro to the waterfront. There is some parking at the GW Masonic Temple and it is also a good location to view fireworks. There are many parking garages in Old Town and they will be a good option as many streets will be closed for pedestrians only.

Can I bring my pet?

For the safety and consideration of all guests, please leave pets at home.

Will merchandise be sold at the venues?

Performers are free to sell their merchandise at their venue at their discretion.

Will there be live fireworks this year?

Top off the evening and ring in the New Year with a fireworks finale over the Potomac that’s sure to make you “ooh and aah”! To limit crowds and prevent the spread of COVID-19, this year’s fireworks display will be visible from multiple vantage points along the Potomac River waterfront from Canal Center Plaza to Jones Point Park.
